The CPTSD Channel – Everything about Complex Trauma

There is limited research on understanding and addressing complex trauma (CPTSD) in India.  Unfortunately, as per Lancet research, about 50% of the individuals who come to help at mental health care facilities are likely to have several CPTSD symptoms (1).  Hence, given the challenges India faces in mental health, individuals, as well as therapists, must learn more about understanding and addressing complex trauma.

Functional impairment or Disturbance in Self Organization (CPTSD)

Our work at the Society for Energy & Emotions, Wellness Space aims to reimagine mental healthcare for India by building emotional resilience.  Around the year 2018, we started assessing PTSD and realized that it was not addressing the imprints of the trauma of a repeated nature that the individual (often a child) could not escape or avoid.  Concurrently, ICD-11 (International Classification of Disease-11) defined Complex PTSD that incorporated what was missing in the DSM-V or ICD-10 definition of PTSD.  Since then, we have revamped our assessment tools (moved to the International Trauma Questionnaire or ITQ) and explored intervention methods that could help us leapfrog traditional evidence-based approaches (EMDR, CBT).

This led to substantial work (based on ethical clearance) on RTM (Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories).  Our recent understanding has been published, so everyone can benefit from it (2–4).  More work is in the pipeline (not published) and is consistent with how CPTSD is.  It overlaps with several other mental health issues (such as BPD-borderline personality disorder or Major Depressive Disorder, and so on). Given the above context, we decided to share the insights via our YouTube channel (The CPTSD Channel).
