Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM)

What if you could resolve trauma without retelling it in detail?

For decades, the standard answer to trauma has been: talk about it, in detail, until it loses its power. For many, that works. For many others — especially those with Complex PTSD rooted in childhood — it doesn't. Repeated detailed recall can re-traumatise. Talking around the trauma keeps people stuck.

Reconsolidation of traumatic memory is built on a different principle.

Memory science has shown that when a memory is briefly reactivated, there is a window — measured in hours — when it can be updated before it is stored again. RTM uses this reconsolidation window with a structured, dissociated recall protocol. Clients don't need to narrate the trauma. They don't need to feel it again. The protocol creates a safe distance — what RTM therapists call the "movie theatre" — and updates the memory's emotional charge through that distance.

Why RTM matters for India?

There is limited work done on addressing PTSD in India and hardly anyone works on understanding CPTSD. Most individuals use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). While EMDR is good, it has constraints (takes time to learn, requires association with trauma memories which could result in re-traumatization, limited insights for CPTSD).

What You'll Discover

I

Understanding RTM

Explore how memory reconsolidation works, why dissociated recall reduces PTSD and CPTSD symptoms without retraumatising, and how RTM compares to EMDR and CBT.

II

Four peer-reviewed publications from Wellness Space includingthree case studies covering CPTSD, PTSD/PGD/AjD, and trauma-informed psychotherapy in young adults.

How to access RTM

Book a clinical session with our team in Ahmedabad or online, or train in RTM yourself through Module 4 of our EARTh-, IMDHA- and IPHM-accredited evidence-based psychotherapy training.

RTM might help if:

You carry the imprint of childhood trauma or ACEs and find that talking about it has only helped so far

You are a therapist, counsellor or psychologist looking to add an evidence-based, research-backed trauma protocol to your practice

You have tried CBT or EMDR and want a shorter, less verbally demanding modality

You have been diagnosed with PTSD or Complex PTSD and are seeking an alternative to standard exposure-based therapy
